Fossil Poo, also called Coprolite. All the way from Mahajanga, Madagascar

Fossil Poo, also called Coprolite All the way from Mahajanga, Madagascar.
Fossilized poo, or coprolites, from Madagascar offers a fascinating glimpse into ancient ecosystems, with specimens from this region often representing a unique blend of scientific and metaphysical intrigue. One of the most notable forms of coprolites found here is Limonite pseudomorph, where the original organic material of the faeces has been replaced by the mineral limonite, a mixture of iron oxides. This transformation happens through a process called pseudomorphism, in which the original biological material is gradually replaced by minerals while retaining the original shape and structure. In this case, iron-rich water percolates through the sediment, and over time, the organic matter of the coprolite is replaced by iron minerals, preserving the intricate details of the fossilised waste. Scientifically, these coprolites can reveal important clues about the diet and behaviours of extinct animals, such as ancient reptiles and mammals that once roamed Madagascar. Metaphysically, coprolites are often seen as symbols of transformation and the passage of time—reminding us that even the most mundane substances can endure for millennia, holding secrets about lifelong past. The limonite pseudomorphs, in particular, suggest a deep connection between the organic and inorganic worlds, where life cycles and geological processes are intricately woven together.
