At the time, I didn’t realize that this beautiful stone had only been discovered in the late 1990s. As a relatively new addition to the mineral world, it’s no surprise that it had slipped under my radar for so long. Crystals like Ocean Jasper can take time to make their way into the public eye, from being mined and polished to reaching the market, which can sometimes delay awareness within the crystal community. Despite this, Ocean Jasper quickly established itself as a must-have among collectors and those drawn to its metaphysical properties.
Why Is It Called Ocean Jasper?
Ocean Jasper gets its name from where it was first discovered: along the shores of the Indian Ocean during low tide in Madagascar. However, it's important to note that not all Ocean Jasper is found in coastal regions and being mined from different areas of Madagascar. In turn, Further expanding the availability of this fascinating stone.
The Evolution of Ocean Jasper
Though Ocean Jasper has only been commercially available for a few decades, it has quickly gained popularity. Early specimens were often called Orbicular Ocean Jasper, due to the distinctive circular patterns that adorned the stones. These orbicular patterns were a hallmark of the first materials found, but as new deposits were discovered, the stone began to show a wider range of characteristics.
Today, Ocean Jasper still displays a variety of vibrant colours, ranging from soft greens and blues to pinks, yellows, and creamy whites. However, more recent deposits tend to feature banded patterns with fewer of the classic orbicular shapes that made the stone so famous in the past. Only a small percentage of the material mined in the past decade has retained the traditional orbicular look.
